After briefly disappearing earlier this week, IO Interactive’s 007 First Light trailer “The Pearl Resort” is now back online. The video was taken offline shortly after its initial release for reasons that remain unclear, but has since returned across the studio’s social media channels.
A Luxury Resort Inspired by Hạ Long Bay?
The new footage takes players to Vietnam and showcases The Pearl Resort, one of the locations Bond will visit during the story.
The tropical setting appears to be closely inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of Hạ Long Bay, the UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its limestone islands and emerald waters. Readers interested in learning more about the location and its possible connection to Bond’s Vietnam adventure may want to revisit our article on the subject from last year.
Classic Bond Aliases Return
The trailer also contains a reference to Bond’s cinematic past. Upon arriving in Vietnam, Bond introduces himself as St. John Smythe— one of Roger Moore’s memorable aliases from A View to a Kill. The line could already briefly be heard in the launch trailer and is another small example of the attention to detail that IO Interactive has brought to its interpretation of the Bond universe.
The Vietnam sequence is not the only place where 007 First Light references Bond’s cinematic past through classic cover identities. In footage from the Webb Industries Gala in London, Charlotte Roth addresses Bond as “Mr. Beech…?” just moments before he delivers the iconic “Bond, James Bond.” The name appears to be a nod to Arlington Beech, an alias used by Timothy Dalton’s Bond in The Living Daylights and later reused by Daniel Craig’s Bond in Casino Royale.
The Mystery Woman from the Story Trailer
The trailer also sheds new light on one of the characters first introduced in the story trailer earlier this year. The mysterious woman featured alongside Bond throughout several Vietnam scenes is revealed to be Theresa Lorca.
For months, the character remained unnamed, leading to considerable speculation about her identity and frequent confusion with Charlotte Roth. The new footage places her at The Pearl Resort and shows several interactions with Bond, making the connection considerably clearer than before.
Lorca is portrayed by Portuguese-born actress Raquel Cipriano, known for several television and film productions, including Amazon’s The Wheel of Time. We previously explored this possibility in our March analysis of the story trailer.
During his arrival at the resort, Bond notices Lorca at the reception desk and remarks that he hopes she is not checking out anytime soon. When she replies that she is actually receiving an upgrade, Bond immediately responds with the playful “Of course you are.”
The exchange is brief, but it serves as a reminder that 007 First Light appears to embrace not only Bond’s espionage skills, but also the charm and flirtatious confidence that have accompanied the character throughout much of his cinematic history.
Multiple Ways to Reach the Target
At the resort, Bond is tasked with making contact with three individuals: Ellis White, Ramon Hernandez, and Theresa Lorca.
The trailer offers another glimpse at the freedom of approach available throughout 007 First Light. In classic Hitman-style fashion, Bond can reach his objectives through stealth, climbing, environmental navigation, social interactions, or by making use of various gadgets.
One sequence in particular demonstrates how Bond can manipulate his surroundings to gain access to a target. As resort staff explain that the lounge area around Theresa Lorca is already fully booked, Bond appears to create an opportunity for himself rather than simply accepting the situation.
Using his Dart Phone, he discreetly fires a dart at one of the nearby guests, who soon finds himself rushing off toward the restroom with apparent stomach troubles. Bond then casually takes the newly vacated seat near Lorca before using his watch to remotely hack a nearby fan. Moments later, the device sends Lorca’s documents flying across the lounge area, seemingly creating the perfect excuse to strike up a conversation while helping her gather the scattered papers.
With the game now in players’ hands, we’ll be soon taking a closer look at some of 007 First Light’s locations, visual inspirations and possible Bond film callbacks in future articles. As always, some references may be intentional, others purely coincidental — but uncovering them is part of the fun.
