When IO Interactive first began discussing 007 First Light last year, the studio confirmed that the game would feature a classic Bond-style title sequence accompanied by an original theme song.
In the months that followed, rumors began circulating about what that song might be. Observant fans eventually discovered a track titled “First Light” in international music rights databases, where both Lana Del Rey and veteran Bond composer David Arnold were listed as creators.
Today, those rumors have finally been confirmed. IO Interactive officially released the song in a lyric video, revealing the text of the track for the first time. The song will serve as the main theme of 007 First Light and is now available to listen to on YouTube as well as on all major streaming platforms.
The announcement also fulfills a long-standing wish of Lana Del Rey herself. In past interviews, the singer had openly expressed her interest in performing a James Bond theme song — something that has now finally become reality with First Light.
For now, the release focuses on the song itself. The full title sequence of the game featuring the track will follow during a special livestream event.
Lana Del Rey’s Bond Dream Becomes Reality
The credits reveal a collaboration that blends Bond legacy with experienced studio musicians.
David Arnold and Lana Del Rey co-wrote the lyrics and composed the track together. Arnold’s involvement connects the game directly to the musical history of the Bond franchise. The composer previously scored several Bond films, including Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace.
Another notable name is Nicholas Dodd, who served as conductor for the recording. Dodd has long collaborated with Arnold and conducted or orchestrated several of his Bond scores.
The production also includes Sean Hurley, one of Los Angeles’ most sought-after session bassists. Hurley has performed on recordings for artists such as John Mayer, Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani, and Alanis Morissette, and regularly contributes to film and television soundtracks.
David Arnold on Continuing the Bond Song Tradition
IO Interactive leadership emphasized the significance of the collaboration between Arnold and Del Rey.
“It’s a joy to watch two extraordinary talents like Lana Del Rey and David Arnold combine forces. The result feels instantly Bond while still bringing a fresh identity for 007 First Light,” said Hakan Abrak, head of IO Interactive. “Bond’s return to gaming is a landmark moment for us at IO Interactive, and having a title song of this quality makes it even more special.”
For Arnold, the song also continues a long tradition within the franchise.
“The music of James Bond has always been a huge part of its identity,” Arnold explained. “A title song has to tell us about the world we are about to enter into. It has to intrigue, excite, and beckon us in. This song joins a long line of genre-defining songs, each one creating a benchmark of style that adds to the magnificent heritage that is the Bond song.”
Arnold also praised his collaboration partner:
“That’s why I was so excited to work with Lana, an artist who brought elegance, atmosphere, and her totally unique character to this piece, which I hope will open the world of Bond to a whole new audience.”
Light, Change and the Question: “Will You Play?”
Beyond the song’s production and the people behind it, the newly released lyrics also hint at some of the themes surrounding Bond’s journey in the game.
Several lines echo the central idea behind the game’s title. The phrase “first light of day” appears repeatedly, suggesting a metaphor for beginnings — a moment of awakening or the start of a journey. In the context of 007 First Light, it can easily be interpreted as a reference to Bond’s earliest adventures before earning his 00 status.
At the same time, the imagery may point to a broader idea. The concept of “first light” can also be understood as the light Bond himself brings into the world around him — a catalyst for change in the institutions and people he encounters. The teaser artwork for the upcoming title sequence seems to reinforce that interpretation, depicting Bond as a literal bearer of light, illuminating the darkness around him.
The lyrics also introduce another intriguing motif: change. Early in the song, Bond’s youth and determination are framed as strengths, accompanied by the line:
“Your strength is your youth, just use it and follow the music play
Promise you’ll never change”
On the surface, the line appears to celebrate the qualities that define a young Bond — confidence, instinct, and a refusal to compromise. Yet moments later, the whispered repetition of “change, change, change” introduces a subtle tension. The word sounds less like reassurance and more like a command, hinting that transformation may ultimately be inevitable.
This tension also mirrors a familiar idea within the Bond mythos: the contrast between the young, driven Bond and the seasoned agent he will eventually become. Early in his career, Bond is often portrayed as more impulsive and emotionally engaged. Over time, however, the experiences of the job shape him into the colder, more controlled figure audiences know from later missions.
In that sense, the lyrics may be playing with both ideas at once. Bond is told not to change — to hold on to the instincts and character that define him. Yet the world he steps into may inevitably change him. At the same time, his presence brings change to the world around him, influencing the institutions, allies, and enemies he encounters along the way.
Another recurring motif in the lyrics is the idea of life as a game.
“Dying just to know whether you’ll play your life like a game
…
Will you play?”
On one level, the line reflects a classic Bond theme: a protagonist willing to risk everything while fate watches from the sidelines. At the same time, the wording carries an additional layer of meaning in the context of a video game. The repeated question “Will you play?” can be read both as a metaphor for life and as a subtle invitation to step into Bond’s adventure as a player.
The lyric video even briefly includes the name “Bond” during the song’s closing section. If intentional, this could stand out within the franchise’s musical tradition, as Bond title songs have traditionally avoided mentioning the character by name.
First Impressions of the Song
On first listen, First Light reveals itself as a surprisingly rich Bond theme. The song moves between almost whispered passages from Lana Del Rey and more powerful, rock-tinged moments, all carried by unmistakably Bond-like orchestral elements. The opening sounds — reminiscent of a sonar pulse or a mysterious marimba — add a playful sense of intrigue that immediately evokes the world of espionage.
It will be particularly interesting to see how The Flight, who are composing the game’s score, weave elements of the title song into the wider soundtrack of 007 First Light. At the same time, it feels remarkable to see David Arnold — whose Bond legacy has so far been rooted primarily in the film series — return to the world of 007 for this project.
The lyrical themes of light, change, and the idea of life as a game also feel particularly well chosen for 007 First Light. The decision to briefly reference “Bond” within the lyrics, along with the repeated question “Will you play?”, are bold touches — but ones that ultimately work in the song’s favor.
Overall, First Light feels like a fantastic addition to the long tradition of Bond title songs, comfortably standing alongside many of the franchise’s most memorable themes.
007 First Light Title Sequence to Debut During Watch Party
Alongside the song’s release, IO Interactive also shared a promotional graphic announcing the upcoming reveal of the game’s opening titles.
The complete title sequence of 007 First Light will be revealed during a special livestream watch party on April 17, following the BAFTA Game Awards broadcast.
The stream begins at 3:00 PM PT / 6:00 PM ET / 11:00 PM BST / 12:00 AM CEST (April 18).
During the livestream, IO Interactive will also present Beyond the Light – Episode 4, with the soundtrack composer duo The Flight appearing as guests to discuss the game’s score and soundtrack. The broadcast will then lead into the debut of the full title sequence.
Fans who prefer to experience the opening sequence for the first time while playing the game themselves will still have the option to avoid spoilers. According to the announcement, the livestream will include a clear warning shortly before the title sequence begins, allowing viewers to leave the stream in time if they wish.
Interestingly, the promotional graphic also references the BAFTA Game Awards broadcast itself — an unusual detail for a game marketing event. While IO Interactive has not announced any live performance, Bond theme songs have historically been closely associated with major award ceremonies. The timing therefore leaves room for speculation that the track could appear in some form during the BAFTA broadcast, potentially even in a staging that ties the song and title sequence together.
