Photo Mode and VR Support for 007 First Light? Never Say Never

During last week’s developer livestream for 007 First Light, IO Interactive answered several community questions about potential game features beyond the main campaign experience. While some topics received fairly clear answers, others were left intentionally open — especially when it comes to future post-launch possibilities.

No Official Mod Support Planned

One feature that apparently will not be part of 007 First Light is official mod support. During the livestream, Audio & Mission Director Dominic Vega confirmed that the game will not support mods. Considering the tightly controlled nature of the James Bond license, that decision may not come as a major surprise.

VR Support? “The Future Is the Future…”

The team was also asked about potential VR support for 007 First Light during the livestream. Senior Licensing Producer Theuns Smit responded:

“Not this time, but the future is the future… Let’s see where we will go.”

The possibility may not be entirely unrealistic. IO Interactive already experimented extensively with VR support for the Hitman franchise, first introducing full VR gameplay for PlayStation VR in 2021 alongside Hitman 3. Later, the studio also brought VR support to PC headsets through SteamVR before eventually releasing Hitman World of Assassination VR for Meta Quest 3.

Reception was mixed, but many players appreciated the added immersion of physically interacting with gadgets, disguises, locks, and stealth mechanics inside IOI’s sandbox environments.

At the same time, 007 First Light appears to feature faster and more cinematic action than Hitman, which could make a VR adaptation significantly more challenging from both a gameplay and comfort perspective. Still, the idea of stepping into Bond’s tuxedo and experiencing IO Interactive’s spy world in virtual reality will likely remain an exciting thought for many fans.

Photo Mode Could Arrive After Launch

A dedicated Photo Mode also feels like an especially natural fit for 007 First Light. Between exotic locations, cinematic action scenes, stylish tuxedos, luxury vehicles, gadgets, and atmospheric lighting, the game already appears tailor-made for virtual photography and creative screenshots.

The topic also sparked discussion on X, where IO Interactive Community Manager Artjom Schmatkow joined the conversation and responded:

“We will not have Photo Mode on launch. We may evaluate the implementation of it for the post-launch period.”

For now, Photo Mode remains firmly in the realm of future possibilities rather than confirmed features. Personally, it is something I would absolutely love to see added later on. Bond adventures — whether in films or games — have always carried a certain sense of virtual travel and escapism, taking audiences to glamorous and dangerous places around the world.

Beyond virtual photography as an increasingly fascinating art form on its own, I have also noticed over the years how much I enjoy keeping self-made screenshots and little in-game memories from those journeys. Even looking through game artbooks or concept art often creates a very similar feeling for me — like returning to places I have virtually travelled through before.
