Locations Speculation

Cold Mystery? 007 First Light May Be Hiding Another Major Location

The Snowy Opening That Never Quite Fit Mauritania

Last year’s Bawma trailer for 007 First Light briefly showed Bond climbing through snowy cliffs before fighting enemies inside a cold industrial-looking facility — scenes that never fully matched the trailer’s main Mauritania setting.

Now, a newly discovered detail from the recent Rules of Spycraft trailer may finally hint at where those sequences actually take place.

A Hidden Arctic Mission?

In the TACSIM mission selection interface shown during the trailer, several locations can briefly be seen, including Malta, United Kingdom and Mauritania. But on the far right side of the screen, another mission entry is partially cut off.

At the top, the word “Arctic” can clearly be read. Beneath it — where the other missions normally display country names — only the letters “AR” remain visible before the UI cuts off the rest.

Even more intriguingly, the small visible section of the mission artwork appears to show an industrial-style interior strongly resembling the snowy facility from last year’s Bawma trailer.

And that suddenly makes those older snowy scenes feel far more important.

Wasn’t It Iceland?

At the end of 2025, many assumed the snowy footage was connected to Iceland, especially since Iceland already plays a confirmed role in the story of 007 First Light.

However, the English warning signs already raised some doubts back then. There may now be several additional clues pointing away from Iceland entirely.

As we now know from preview material and developer footage, Bond is still serving in the Royal Navy during the Iceland prologue and wears a noticeably shorter military-style haircut throughout those early scenes, which also appear to take place largely at night.

The snowy Bawma footage, however, shows Bond with slightly longer hair and during broad daylight — potentially suggesting these scenes take place later in the story, or in an entirely different location altogether. If the footage is still connected to Iceland, it may point toward a later return to the region rather than the original prologue mission itself.

A Fictional Arctic Base — Or A Real Region?

What makes the TACSIM entry particularly unusual is not just the snowy setting itself — but the missing country name.

Other missions shown in the interface are tied to clearly identified locations such as Malta, the United Kingdom or Mauritania. Here, however, IO Interactive simply uses the broader term “Arctic.”

That makes the wording choice especially intriguing.

Unlike Antarctica — a largely unclaimed polar continent without traditional national borders — the Arctic is not one specific landmass or country, but an entire northern polar region stretching across territories connected to nations such as Norway, Canada, Denmark, Russia and the United States.

So why avoid naming a specific location this time?

One possibility is that the game features a fictional arctic base detached from any real-world nation altogether.

Another is that the mission takes place in a remote northern territory where the environment itself matters more than national borders. In landscapes dominated by snow, ice and isolated industrial facilities, the broader “Arctic” label may simply fit the atmosphere better than attaching the mission to a specific country.

The wider Bond franchise has explored similar arctic regions before, from Iceland in Die Another Day to Norway in No Time to Die and the Siberian pre-title sequence of A View to a Kill.

And now, 007 First Light may potentially be heading even deeper into the frozen north.

Could The Arctic Be Connected To The Nerve Gas?

There may even be a larger story connection underneath all this.

Some preview coverage already hinted that Bond encounters a dangerous nerve gas in Iceland. If that substance becomes important later in the game, the mysterious arctic setting could potentially house its true origin — perhaps hidden inside an isolated research facility somewhere deep in the frozen north.

For now, the partially hidden TACSIM entry raises more questions than answers. But it increasingly feels as though IO Interactive may be teasing a remote frozen location deliberately detached from any clearly identifiable nation.

And if so, Bond could be heading into one of the most isolated environments the franchise has explored in years.

What do you think IO Interactive is teasing here?
