007 First Light has launched with a bang, selling an impressive 1.5 million units within its first 24 hours on the market. For IO Interactive, the number represents far more than a strong debut. It is an early sign that the studio’s ambitious vision for James Bond has connected with a massive audience around the world.
The milestone is particularly noteworthy given the scale of the project. While IO Interactive built a loyal following through the Hitman franchise, 007 First Light marks the studio’s first opportunity to work with one of entertainment’s most recognizable brands. Judging by the launch numbers, Bond’s return to gaming appears to have exceeded expectations.
A Strong Start for Bond

The strong sales performance follows months of anticipation leading up to release. In February, IO Interactive announced that 007 First Light had surpassed 2.2 million wishlists across platforms. While wishlist figures do not automatically translate into sales, they often provide a useful indication of market interest. In the case of 007 First Light, the enthusiasm appears to have converted into immediate purchases on a remarkable scale.
According to multiple industry reports, 007 First Light may have cost around $200 million to develop, potentially making it the most ambitious and expensive project in IO Interactive’s history. While the exact figure has never been officially confirmed by the studio, the reported budget highlights the scale of the undertaking. Determining profitability from the outside remains impossible due to factors such as marketing expenses, licensing agreements, platform fees, and regional pricing. However, reaching 1.5 million sales within the first 24 hours strongly suggests that the game has already taken a substantial step toward recouping its reported investment.
The game’s commercial success has been accompanied by equally positive critical reception. At the time of writing, 007 First Light holds a Metacritic score of 87 based on 60 critic reviews. The combination of strong reviews and strong sales is often a powerful indicator of long-term momentum.
How Does 007 First Light Compare?
While direct comparisons between games are never perfect, the launch becomes even more impressive when viewed alongside other recent releases. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II surpassed one million copies sold on its first day, while Silent Hill f also crossed the one-million mark within 24 hours.
A step above those titles sits Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which sold more than 2.5 million copies during its first 24 hours and became the fastest-selling first-party launch in PlayStation history. Although 007 First Light does not quite reach that level, the comparison illustrates just how strong its commercial debut has been.
For a studio of IO Interactive’s size, the result is particularly noteworthy. In recent years, a growing number of independent European developers have demonstrated that they can compete with much larger publishers. Studios such as Larian Studios (Baldur’s Gate 3), Remedy Entertainment (Alan Wake II), Arrowhead Game Studios (Helldivers 2), and Warhorse Studios (Kingdom Come: Deliverance II) have all achieved major success on the global stage.
With 007 First Light, IO Interactive appears to have secured its place among them. The success also reflects the studio’s remarkable transformation over the past decade. Once known primarily as the studio behind the Hitman series, the Danish developer has expanded into an international company with studios in Copenhagen, Malmö, Barcelona, Brighton, and Istanbul and a workforce of well over 500 employees. At the same time, the company is already investing in its future through additional projects, including the new IP Project Fantasy. With 007 First Light, that long-term growth strategy appears to be paying off.
Critics and players alike are already discussing 007 First Light as a potential Game of the Year contender.
Yet the race is far from over. Several major releases are still expected later in 2026, most notably Grand Theft Auto VI. If Rockstar’s long-awaited blockbuster arrives in time to meet the eligibility deadlines for the major award shows, it could dramatically reshape this year’s awards season.
Regardless of how the awards race unfolds, 007 First Light has already achieved something remarkable: it has given IO Interactive the biggest launch in the studio’s history and established a strong foundation for the future of the franchise — and perhaps for Bond’s next adventure in gaming.
