Since the release of 007 First Light, we’ve received quite a few questions from you about one thing in particular: How well does Bond’s latest adventure run on Steam Deck? At the end of July, there was finally some good news for players hoping to take Bond on the go: after initially being rated Playable shortly after launch, 007 First Light is now officially Steam Deck Verified.
It is another step in IO Interactive’s growing support for portable play. 007 First Light already supports Xbox Play Anywhere and handheld PCs such as the ROG Xbox Ally, while a Nintendo Switch 2 version is also on the way, currently rumoured to arrive on September 16.
What does Steam Deck Verified actually mean?
Valve uses four compatibility ratings to show players what kind of experience they can expect on Steam Deck. Games that have not yet been reviewed are listed as Unknown. Unsupported titles currently do not function properly on the device, while Playable games work but may require some manual adjustments or workarounds. At the top sits Verified, Valve’s highest rating, reserved for games that work well on Steam Deck right out of the box.
And that green badge is not simply a label assigned by IO Interactive itself. Games are reviewed internally by Valve, whose testing team checks them against several key criteria before awarding the Verified rating:
- Input: The game needs to offer full controller support, use appropriate controller button icons and automatically bring up the on-screen keyboard whenever text input is required.
- Display: It needs to support the Steam Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, use suitable default settings and ensure that text remains readable on the handheld’s smaller display.
- Seamlessness: Players should not encounter compatibility warnings, and any launcher or additional interface required to play the game needs to be fully navigable using a controller.
- System Support: The game and its middleware need to function correctly on Steam Deck, including through Proton where required.
Valve also considers performance, although Verified does not guarantee a specific frame rate. For 007 First Light, the upgrade from Playable confirms that the game now meets Valve’s full Steam Deck compatibility requirements.
