Before the gaming world turns its eyes to Gamescom, developers gather for devcom—Europe’s largest professional game developer event in Cologne. This year, IO Interactive presents two technical sessions showcasing innovations inside the proprietary Glacier engine—tech that powers 007: First Light, Project Fantasy, and future Hitman titles. Both talks take place on Monday, August 18, 2025.
Building a Modular Camera System for the Glacier Engine
Speaker: Kira Buczilowski (Senior Engine Programmer)
This session explores a new, ultra-flexible camera system—built with designers and gameplay programmers—to handle blockbuster-style cinematics and varied gameplay in large, streaming environments. It’s data-driven, performance-friendly, and modular enough to evolve with future projects.
What it could mean for 007: First Light: smoother gameplay-to-cutscene transitions, dynamic perspective shifts in chases, and cinematic highlights during big action set pieces and stunts—moments that feel authentically Bond while preserving player control.
Accelerating the Resource System Using a Virtual File System in the Glacier Engine
Speaker: Nicolai Herrmann (Senior Tools Programmer)
With Hitman, Project Fantasy, and 007: First Light in parallel, this talk details how Glacier’s resource system embraces the principle of “instant everything” to keep workflows real time. A virtual file system lets developers join a project, compile locally, and contribute within minutes instead of hours.
What it could mean for 007: First Light: faster iteration on assets, animation, and environments—allowing the team to fine-tune Bond’s world with greater speed and precision.
Both talks highlight how IOI’s engineering advances can directly shape the look, feel, and development pace of 007: First Light—essential viewing for anyone curious about the tech behind Bond’s next adventure.
